Trial best chance to clear my name, says Najib

FORMER prime minister Najib Razak is girding himself for a full trial for graft, saying it is the chance for him to establish his innocence.

“I believe in my innocence. This is the best opportunity for me to clear my name, after I have been slandered and accused of crimes,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court complex today.

The former prime minister, who has been at the court for six hours, said the graft and power abuse charges relating to SRC International were politically motivated.

“This was expected, is desired by the new government. If this is the price that I have to pay for my 42 years of service to the country, if this is the price that I have to pay, then so be it.

“What I hope and pray for is that justice and fairness will prevail, in accordance to the rule of law.”

Najib said he would not be making statements relating to the charges: “The judge has issued a gag order. I respect the judge’s decision. I will not speak further than that,” he said.

“I wish to thank the MACC and the security forces for treating me well and respecting me as a former prime minister.

“I hope the process will proceed well. I hope my supporters remain calm. I am impressed by their presence and their moral support for me. Even though I’ve not asked them to, they’ve come on their own initiative. Thank you. As I’ve said previously, I hope Allah will grant my wishes and what I have prayed for.”

Najib was later greeted by cheers from supporters when leaving the court. – July 4, 2018.

  • Haha! Why only now when you are forced to prove your innocence? Why not earlier? When the rakyat n opposition called out loudly for you to prove your innocence but you refused

  • A psychopath who is way beyond his depth. A role model for many #copycat_crimes in Malaysia that tipped Malaysia into #complex_society_class -- the antithesis of #tujuh_turunan
