FORMER prime minister Najib Razak was not worried about the US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) stashed in his bank account in 2013 because its existence was known to then Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, who did not query him about it, Malaysiakini reports today.
Najib told the news portal in an interview he had assumed everything was fine in regards to the money as the central bank had not questioned him about it.
“If Bank Negara is in the know of these funds and they had an inkling or some knowledge that there could be some doubts about the source of the funds, I expected them to tell me.
“But nothing of that sort happened,” he was quoted as saying.
Because there was “no comeback from Bank Negara. I assumed everything was fine.”
Zeti was the central bank governor when it was revealed that RM2.6 billion had been depositied into the prime minister’s personal bank account. She is now the Permodalan Nasional Bhd chairman as well as a member of the Council of Eminent Persons assembled by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Najib is under investigation for misappropriation and laundering of funds siphoned off 1Malaysia Development Bhd, the state investor he established when he became prime minister in 2009.
He has maintained that the billions found in his bank account were a donation from a member of the Saudi royal family and that the money has since been returned to the donor. – July 2, 2018.
