NEWLY elected Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamid will give his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission tomorrow.
“I have been asked to explain several issues. One of them is about a foundation owned by my family,” said the former deputy prime minister in his maiden speech as Umno president today.
Zahid said the foundation is a charitable organisation that is meant to build orphanages, mosques, and tahfiz schools.
“The money comes from my friends and I who want to do charity,” said Zahid.
When asked if he would be grilled on allegations that Umno had received money from scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd, Zahid was evasive and said he did not want to guess what other questions MACC would have for him.
“I will give my full cooperation to MACC, although I am not sure about the questions that will be asked,” said Zahid.
Several Umno accounts belonging to the head office and states were frozen by MACC last week.
Zahid said Umno has appealed to MACC to allow for the use of certain funds from the frozen accounts to pay overheads.
He said Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had sent a letter to the anti-graft body to allow it to use the funds to pay staff salaries, rental, and other overhead expenditures.
“The workers should not suffer because of this,” said Zahid.
According to a report by Malay-language daily Sinar Harian, Zahid is being questioned over allegations that he used over RM800,000 from the foundation to pay his and his wife’s credit card bills.
The daily claimed that MACC had initiated a probe into the allegations early of this year following a tipoff. – July 1, 2018.
