DR Asyraf Wajdi, former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, is the new Umno Youth leader, having won 73 of the 191 divisional votes in party polls today.
His rivals Senator Khairul Azwan Harun has 58 and Pahang Youth chief Shahar Abdullah has 56. Sg Besar division chief and fugitive Jamal Yunos has two divisional votes.
Former deputy minister Aziz Kaprawi congratulated Asyraf on Twitter at 9.21am.
Before joining politics, Asyraf was a lecturer at International Islamic University. In 2013, he was appointed by former prime minister Najib Razak to head Islamic Dakwah Foundation of Malaysia.
He joined the PMD in 2015 and served under Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamli Khir Baharom on Islamic Affairs.
Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusof said the official results will be released at PWTC at 5pm today. – June 24, 2018.
