BUKIT Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun today distanced himself from the allegations of abuse in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) rental system for trading lots at the Masjid India Ramadan bazaar.
He said his support letter to DBKL for a Bersatu Youth member to obtain lots at the bazaar was issued with the intention of helping traders who needed the space.
The DAP lawmaker said his letter clearly stated that DBKL still had the final say.
“My intention was to help traders. So I wrote the support letter stating conditions that other than the rental charged by DBKL, no other fees were to be collected by any party.
“My letter also stated that DBKL had to make the final decision,” Fong said in a statement today following news that reports would be lodged with the anti-graft authorities over the allegations involving Bukit Bintang Bersatu Youth chief Mohd Noorhisyam Abdul Karim.
Noorhisyam allegedly used political connections to secure and rent 80 lots at the bazaar out for as high as RM5,000 each.
DBKL Licencing and Petty Traders Development Department director Anwar Mohd Zain said he was “forced to approve” Noorhisyam’s application after initially telling him no more lots were available.
DBKL gave in after Noorhisyam’s relentless “pestering” and a support letter by Fong.
Noorhisyam has denied taking money from bazaar traders and told Malaysiakini he would lodge a police matter on the allegations against him.
Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman has said the matter should be investigated if there were elements of bribery and abuse of power.
Fong, meanwhile, said he was speaking with the traders involved to get a clearer picture on what transpired. – June 15, 2018.
