Muslims forbidden from extending Xmas greetings, says PAS Youth

MUSLIMS are forbidden from celebrating Christmas as it is against the teachings of Islam, said PAS Youth Chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi.

Bahasa Malaysia daily Sinar Harian reported the Batu Buruk assemblyman as saying Muslims must avoid extending Christmas greetings as doing so has elements of “syirik” (idolatry).

“Christians claim God had a child, and this is against our beliefs as Muslims. Muslims must not celebrate Christmas and must not post Christmas greetings on Facebook.

“They (Christians) claim the prophet Isa (Jesus) to be the son of God, and this is ‘syirik’ in Islam,” he said during a lecture in Kuala Terengganu last night.

Khalil, who is the son of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, said there are ulama who allow Muslims to celebrate the festivals of other cultures, so long as they do not involve the matter of faith.

“Muslims cannot celebrate other religions’ festivals because it involves the matter of faith. But if the celebration is purely based on culture, it is allowed.

“For example, Chinese New Year is about Chinese culture (so, it is okay for Muslims to celebrate it). But Deepavali cannot be celebrated by Muslims because it has to do with religion, Hinduism.

“There are clerics who say if a Muslim lives in a multicultural society, (celebrating other religions’ festivals) is allowed, but there must be limits. If we want to show our respect, just wish them happy holidays. That’s okay.

“But to wish them on Facebook as if we acknowledge their faith… that is haram (forbidden).”

Several days ago, Federal Territories Mufti Dr Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri said it is alright for Muslims to wish Christians Merry Christmas.

“Muslims are permitted to make such expressions… without glorifying other religions.

“It is no more than a greeting, and shows we acknowledge the happiness of those celebrating.

“Muslims can wish Christians (Merry Christmas),” he said on his official website, Bayan Linnas. – December 24, 2018.

  • If Khalil wants to live in the cave, that's his freedom to choose but he doesn't have this similar freedom to ask the rest of civilization to follow his foot step and teaching. Please also explain how such "cave man" mentality could bring food on the table ?

  • Christmas is mainly about celebrating Jesus birth, although Muslims and Christians have different view about divinity of Jesus; even Christians have many denominations disagreeing about Jesus divinity. Cant see anything wrong with celebrating Jesus's birthday despite the different view. When people start amplifying differences rather than common things, it will only seed conflict.

  • Excuse me Khalil, Jesus Christ whom you recognise as Nabi Isa, claimed He is the Son of God. Those who believe in his claim or his followers are called Christians. Christians celebrate both the birth and the death of Jesus as God's gift of eternal love and life. Christmas is just a clever invention of man to make it more convenient to remember God's gift to man and boost sales. Wishing one another Merry Christmas is a gesture of friendship and kindness, not a threat to any one's religion or faith. We are all children of God.
