Kuala Lumpur safe, says minister, after cave-ins

FEDERAL Territories Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Zaliha Mustafa, has assured the public that Kuala Lumpur remains safe after a sinkhole swallowed a tourist in Jalan Masjid India last Friday.

However, she advised the public to exercise caution near the affected area.

“The police are taking measures to secure the area, and we do not allow the public to enter, but other areas in Kuala Lumpur remain safe,” she was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Zaliha earlier visited the site of a drain collapse in Jalan Pantai Permai. The cave-in created a large hole in the ground. Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil was also present.

She said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will repair the damaged drainage system, with work expected to be completed in three weeks.

“Most importantly, residents in the area must prioritise their safety to prevent any undesirable events,” she said.

Zaliha said a strength test should be conducted on sewerage in Kuala Lumpur that are over 30 years old.

“We will collaborate with the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, Indah Water Konsortium, and relevant agencies,” she added. – August 29, 2024.
