THE government must stop its politically motivated campaign to charge Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin with sedition, said Lawyers for Liberty today.
Its director Zaid Malek said in a statement that it is not “sedition to question or criticise the exercise of constitutional power by the king.”
This morning, Muhyiddin was charged with sedition for allegedly insulting former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah by questioning the ruler’s exercise of constitutional power in the appointment of the prime minister after the last general election.
Muhyiddin claimed trial and has been released on bail.
“In this country, the king is a constitutional monarch, and not a feudal ruler. His exercise of his power can thus be debated, questioned or criticised. This is the very bedrock of our system of constitutional monarchy,” said Zaid.
“Those who have been agitating for Muhyiddin to be charged are tainting the very basic structure of our constitution by importing into it feudalism. Regrettably, Pakatan Harapan and Umno politicians from the government have been at the forefront of this politically motivated campaign.”
Zaid said the use of the Sedition Act was a clear failure of PH and a betrayal of their previous promise to repeal the draconian law.
Meanwhile, former MP and activist Kua Kia Soong said the use of the Sedition Act against Muhyiddin, a former prime minister, was outrageous and indicated the death of the “reformasi” movement lauded by PH.
Kua said the PH leaders in the government today seemed to have forgotten their opposition to the use of the Sedition Act when they were in the opposition.
He added that the Sedition Act had been used against leaders of the opposition before, including the late Karpal Singh.
“If he were alive today, he would no doubt use the strongest words against the former reformist who is now the prime minister, and he would not spare his former DAP comrades who sit in the government today and allow the use of this despicable law against Malaysians,” Kua said in a statement.
He pointed out that the sedition charge brought against Karpal Singh was for words he was alleged to have said in court during Anwar’s first corruption trial in 2000. – August 27, 2024.
