DAP, Amanah to learn from Sungai Bakap defeat

PAKATAN Harapan parties DAP and Amanah said they respected the choice made by voters in the recently concluded Sungai Bakap by-election and vowed to work harder to regain people’s support.

DAP parliamentary leader Nga Kor Ming, who is also the housing and local government minister, said DAP remained committed to supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in advancing reforms and implementing more policies benefitting the nation.

“We stand unwaveringly with the prime minister in our efforts to rebuild our beloved nation,“ he said in a statement today.

Nga highlighted that DAP, with its current 40 MPs, would enhance engagement with grassroots communities to better understand public sentiment from diverse perspectives.

According to Nga, the party is dedicated to achieving political milestones and earning the trust of the people as it prepares for the next general election.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, meanwhile, said his party had accepted the result of the by-election and would strive to strengthen the people’s support for the unity government.

Mohamad Sabu said the unity of the machinery between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional also needed to be strengthened to face future elections.

“Amanah respects the results of the Sungai Bakap by-election with full confidence that continuous efforts will be mobilised by Amanah to boost the people’s support for the unity government.

“Amanah would like to say a million thanks to all the party workers at all levels who have given their full commitment throughout the campaign period,” he said in a brief statement today.

In the Sungai Bakap by-election on Saturday, Perikatan Nasional candidate Abidin Ismail won by securing 14,489 votes, defeating PKR/Pakatan Harapan’s Joohari Ariffin, who garnered 10,222 votes.  

The Sungai Bakap by-election was held after its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, who was also the PAS Nibong Tebal division chief, died on May 24. – July 9, 2024.
