AGRICULTURE and Food Minister Mohamad Sabu said the government would end subsidies and price controls for chicken in Malaysia on November 1, but would retain them for eggs.

“The termination of subsidies for chicken takes into account the current supply and price trends, with farm prices and chicken production costs stabilising, which has contributed to the current market prices being below the price ceiling.

“In this regard, the government will ensure that the selling price of chicken remains reasonable,” he said at a press conference today.

Currently, the maximum retail price for standard chicken is set at RM9.40 per kg, and for Grade A eggs, it’s 45 sen per egg, while Grade B eggs are priced at 43 sen, and Grade C eggs are at 41 sen in Peninsular Malaysia.

Earlier this month, while tabling Budget 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said temporary price controls for chicken and eggs would be lifted as current trends indicated a stable supply, and the move would enable the local market to function freely in ensuring sufficient stock. – October 30, 2023.
