YANG di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted an audience to KK Mart founder Chai Kee Kan. The convenience store chain has been under the spotlight after socks bearing the word “Allah” were found being sold at one of its outlets in Bandar Sunway.

Chai, also known as KK Chai, took the opportunity to apologise to the king and all Muslims for the convenience store’s sale of the socks during the audience, which lasted 15 minutes.

“All parties must be more responsible. Don’t let this incident repeat, and I hope that this will be my last time stressing on the matter,” decreed the king, according to the Royal Press Office in a statement that was posted on Sultan Ibrahim’s Facebook page.

“Once again, I warn all parties against taking advantage of the matter, including inciting the rakyat. I do not want this issue to prolong any further.”

On March 27, the king urged all parties to stop taking advantage of the controversy, saying the issue should be left to the authorities.

The audience comes after Sunday’s attack on a KK Mart in Kuching – the third in a week.

Earlier in the week, outlets of the convenience store in Kuantan, Pahang and Bidor, Perak were also attacked with Molotov cocktails.

KK Mart founder KK Chai and his wife Loh Siew Mui, who is the company director, have claimed trial in court to a charge of wounding religious feelings. – April 3, 2024.
