PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim must call for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council following the latest petrol bomb attacks on KK Mart outlets, said Lim Guan Eng.

The former finance minister and Bagan MP said in a statement that the meeting was needed to prevent the matter from getting out of hand.

Three KK Mart outlets had been targets of petrol bomb attacks with the latest incident being in Kuching, Sarawak, on Sunday.

The first and second incidents happened in Perak and Pahang on March 26 and 29 respectively.

So far, no arrests have been made but the police are investigating the attacks.

“The prime minister should summon an emergency National Security Council meeting to adopt urgent measures and prevent any escalation that would jeopardise peace and harmony in our multi-ethnic and multi-religious society,” Lim, who is also DAP chairman, said in a statement.

Lim also said Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh’s continuous harping on the “Allah socks” issue only increased the tensions in the country.

He said Akmal Saleh was being irresponsible and that it was unbecoming of a Malacca exco.

“Despite the Umno Youth chief’s denials of political motivation and his condemnation of the attacks on KK Mart, his boycott has not stopped the violent attacks on KK Mart outlets by unknown dangerous extremist elements,” he said.

KK Mart has been under the spotlight after socks bearing the word “Allah” were found being sold at one of its outlets in Bandar Sunway.

Its founder KK Chai and his wife Loh Siew Mui, who is the company director, have claimed trial in court to a charge of wounding religious feelings.

Meanwhile, Kuching district police chief Ahsmon Bajah said police are hunting for those behind the latest attack.

“We have already received a report on the incident that happened at Jalan Satok KK Mart on March 31.

“The front of the shop was affected by fire after the Molotov cocktail was thrown onto boxes containing mineral water bottles at the store front.

“We are probing the case under Section 435 of the Penal Code for causing public mischief by arson,” he said. – April 2, 2024.
