NEGRI Sembilan has approved a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the mining of non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE), which was expected to commence this year, Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun said.

He said developments on NR-REE should include collaboration with Menteri Besar Inc (MBI) to monitor progress and ensure outcomes were not mishandled.

He said landowners could apply to mine on their property, but companies must collaborate with MBI to oversee and guarantee the absence of negative impact on neighbouring lands. Geologists would be appointed to ensure effective control.

“While the central government only approves China’s mining methods, we maintain an open approach where any company is welcome to enter.

“But they are required to present their proposed method for approval,” he told a press conference after chairing an exco meeting at Wisma Negeri today.

He said mining activities were expected to generate positive outcomes for the state government, and private companies have submitted requests to mine NR-REE.

The Minerals and Geosciences Department has confirmed Jelebu and Kuala Pilah have deposits of these minerals, and exploration of these areas would not involve forest reserves.

He said state Industry and Non-Muslim Affairs Action Committee chairman Teo Kok Seong would visit REE factories in China to gather information for the development of NR-REE in the state. – Bernama, January 3, 2024.
