THE Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has advised the public to prioritise safety when engaging in sea activities during the festive season.
MMEA director-general Hamid Mohd Amin said those planning to organise and participate in such activities should check the weather forecast by the Meteorological Department, especially considering rough sea conditions due to the northeast monsoon.
“MMEA urges all parties heading to the sea to ensure their safety by wearing life jackets while sailing, fishing or engaging in any activities involving movement at sea.
“In addition to life jackets, those engaging in sea activities are advised to carry a Personal Locator Beacon as it can assist and expedite search and rescue efforts at sea in case of emergencies,” he said in a statement today.
Hamid advised tour boat operators to comply with maritime regulations and laws, including adhering to passenger limits and providing enough life jackets.
He said the public should contact the emergency hotline MERS at 999 or their nearest state Maritime Operations Centre in the event of a maritime emergency. – Bernama, December 25, 2023.
