Sarawak mulls undersea cable links to Singapore, peninsula

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg says the state is discussing undersea cable projects with Putrajaya, which will feed hydropower from Sarawak to the peninsula and Singapore. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 5, 2023.

SARAWAK Premier Abang Johari Openg said the development of two dedicated undersea cables to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to channel hydropower from the state was under discussion.

“We are now discussing with the federal government, but first is the question of whether we have the excess energy.

“At the moment we have excess energy, so we can share with our neighbours. Now we are dealing with Singapore, which has been agreed by both prime ministers,” he told the media after visiting the Malaysia Pavilion at COP28 in Dubai today.

The premier said there was improved technology for undersea cables, which was competitively cheaper to ensure the project was realised, but did not mention any specific timeline.

Abang Johari said the state government was expanding its hydropower capacity to generate 20GW of energy.

He said the state government was trying to improve its approach to hydropower generation using a cascading dam instead of a reservoir, which is more suitable for the environment.

“This has been done in Sweden, which is exporting 40GW of power to (the Eurozone).

“What we want to do now is to share with our neighbours, on the domestic level, of course, with Malaysia, then with Singapore and Indonesia – the latter with which we are cooperating on one hydro project,” he said. – Bernama, December 5, 2023.
