ANY future development in Kuala Lumpur would depend on a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) being carried out to address traffic congestion, Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ramkarpal Singh said.

He said the TIA would cover the current conditions of roads, level of service, and future traffic projections.

“Based on future traffic projections, infrastructure improvements will be recommended. The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has a more comprehensive and integrated traffic planning as a long-term solution to deal with congestion.

“DBKL is also focusing on the development of user-friendly, efficient and accessible public transport to achieve the target of 70% public transport use by 2040,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to a question from Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau-PH) about the ministry’s efforts to address continuous development in Kuala Lumpur as the population rapidly grows.

Ramkarpal said various efforts have been launched, such as the GOKL bus service, special bus, bicycle and pedestrian routes, and making route information and bus services accessible via digital apps.

To a supplementary question from Zakri Hassan (Kangar-PN) on efforts by the government to overcome flash floods in Kuala Lumpur, Ramkarpal said the matter was included in the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040, which was launched by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. – Bernama, November 15, 2023.
