THE number of live births in Malaysia decreased by 2.8% in the third quarter (Q3) of 2023 to 110,354 from 113,506 births in Q3 2022, the “Demographic Statistics” released by the Statistics Department today showed.

Chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin in a statement said the figure comprised 57,260 male babies and 53,094 female infants.

“Selangor recorded the highest number of live births at 20,648, while Labuan recorded the lowest at 375 births,” he said.

He said the findings also showed 46,646 deaths in Q3 2023, a decrease of 10% from 51,841 deaths in Q3 2022.

Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths in Q3 2023 with 7,217, while Putrajaya had the lowest with 72 deaths, he said.

Uzir said Malaysia’s population in Q3 2023 stood at 33.5 million, an increase of 1.8% from 32.9 million in Q3 2022.

He said the male population grew from 17.2 million to 17.5 million, while the female population expanded from 15.7 million to 16 million. – Bernama, November 7, 2023.
