THE Children Development Department was set up to replace the Children’s Division under the Social Welfare Department, effective September 1, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri said.

In a statement today, she said the department, announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in February, was the best solution to the issues of child neglect and abuse.

She said the new department would provide quality services to the people, especially children, focusing  on prevention, development, protection, rehabilitation and integration into society.

A total of 169 contract employees have been approved to staff the department this year.

She said efforts to mobilise the community as well as co-protectors to safeguard the welfare of children, will also be increased all over the country.
