DEPUTY Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed should have encouraged Malaysians abroad to come home to vote in the elections instead of slamming Cathay Pacific for waiving rebooking charges for those travelling on polling day, said Bersih 2.0 acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari.
Shahrul said it was as if Nur Jazlan was against the idea of Malaysians abroad coming home for the 14th general election (GE14).
“It’s quite funny for a minister to say such things. He should not have interfered in the business of Cathay Pacific.
“The minister should not have made that comment, which I think, in a way, was trying to curtail the democratic right of people to come (back home) and vote,” Shahrul said today.
The Hong Kong-based airline announced that it will waive ticket rebooking or rerouting charges for Malaysians whose travel plans would be affected by the elections.
The waiver, applicable if the travel date falls on polling day, will be given to only Malaysian passengers irrespective of the fare type.
Nur Jazlan then criticised the announcement on Twitter, linking the airline’s move to its support for “regime change”.
“Wow. Good marketing move by them. Didn’t know that regime change is part of their business plan: Cathay Pacific waives rebooking, rerouting charges for Malaysians travelling on polling day,” he tweeted. – March 29, 2018.
