AN MIC youth leader has tendered his resignation today, three days after former party youth chief Sivaraj Chandran quit Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Indian component.
Selangor MIC Youth chief P. Punithan reportedly sent his resignation letter to party president S.A. Vigneswaran today.
His resignation means he is no longer Bandar Baru Batang Berjuntai (Kuala Selangor) branch youth chief.
“After serving and holding various positions in MIC for the last 15 years, today I made the difficult decision to quit the party.
“I would like to thank MIC leaders at all levels who have helped me throughout my stint. I believe I have provided my best over the years,” Punithan was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.
“This is my personal decision. I hope MIC will continue to be the ‘Indian voice’ in the coalition government,” he added.
Punithan has served as an MIC central working committee member, as well as MIC Youth secretary and MIC information chief.
Vigneswaran confirmed receiving Punithan’s letter and said Punithan is keen on joining Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“We discussed at length his (Punithan’s) politics and his future.
“In the meeting, he told me he wants to quit MIC to continue his political career with PN,” Vigneswaran told Malaysiakini.
“I accept his decision and wish him all the best in his career with PN.”
On Tuesday, former Cameron Highlands MP Sivaraj claimed he had reluctantly decided to quit MIC, citing incompatibility with the party leadership.
Sivaraj, a senator, said his decision was the best one for him and MIC.
Earlier this month, Sivaraj was removed from MIC’s central working committee. – June 30, 2023.
