IN an all-too familiar diatribe now, Prime Minister Najib Razak today slammed a “93 year-old leader” for blaming Anwar Ibrahim’s sacking in 1998 on the police, instead of appreciating their work in keeping the country safe.
The “93-year-old leader” is Najib and his government’s euphemism for Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister who has now repudiated the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government and is challenging them in the next general election.
“A leader who is already 93 years old claimed that it was the police who was responsible, because it pushed him to sack the then-deputy prime minister in 1998.
“His statement was already replied to by former Royal Malaysian Police top cop Rahim Noor, who was the Inspector-General of Police at the time,” Najib said in his Police Day address in Kuala Lumpur.
He added the leader’s favourite son had also mentioned that he would terminate the service of all high-ranking government officials if his political party was given the mandate to rule in the next election.
Dr Mahathir founded Bersatu after he left Umno. His son, Mukhriz Mahathir, a former Kedah menteri besar, also left Umno.
Mukhriz is currently Bersatu deputy president.
Rahim Noor told Utusan that he was perplexed by Dr Mahathir’s claim that they were the ones who prompted him to sack Anwar Ibrahim.
Rahim said he didn’t know what the former prime minister’s motive was in making such claims, as police had no legal power to dismiss any minister.
“I don’t know what he was thinking and why he said those things, as we have no legal power,” said Rahim, who was the top cop when Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister.
Anwar was sacked on September 2, 1998, and arrested and jailed on September 20 the same year.
Najib said today’s government was different as it always appreciated the police’s contributions to the country.
He said the leader’s latest claim was among other baseless allegations made by certain quarters.
“I am frustrated with the wild allegations by certain parties that create untrue perceptions of the police force, saying they are government lackeys and do not earn their pay, and with claims of an increase in the crime rate,” said Najib.
Najib said that the crime rate had in fact decreased drastically by 53% last year.
There are 130,401 police personnel nationwide.
Najib said the police played an important role, including in safeguarding the country from terror threats and crime, in ensuring the nation’s security.
“I was very proud to announce during an anti-terrorism conference in Australia that no Malaysians were killed from an attack by the Islamic State.
“It proves PDRM’s priceless contributions, and I hope it will remain that way,” he said in his speech before launching the 211th Police Day celebrations on Sunday.
Najib said the welfare of PDRM personnel would never be forsaken.
He announced several goodies for the police force, including an allocation of 10,000 units of the PDRM 1Malaysia Public Housing Project and RM1.5 billion in funds for police cooperative members.
“The housing project is aimed to provide affordable housing for police personnel.
“I hope the police will always improve its services and forge a better trust with the public,” he added. – March 25, 2018

Anwar suffered black eyes at the hands of Rahim Noor, the IGP at the time. Most people would think that it was Mahathir who ordered Rahim Noor to take it out on Anwar. Rahim Noor went to jail for three months for exercising his fists. It seems that the IGP had personal grudge against Anwar, or was it to show his boss his support and that the boss was always right. Wonder whether Mahathir told Rahim Noor then that he appreciated his loyalty. Mahathir should have sacked Rahim Noor then to prove that he did not order the assault. Perhaps Mahathir acts like what Najib is doing; IGP has to be praised.
