Comedy club owner tries again to get AG to quash charges

RIZAL Van Geysel, co-founder of the Crackhouse Comedy Club, has filed another letter to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to quash his cybercrime charges.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Aslinda Che Seman told Sessions Court judge Priscilla Hemamalini Nadarajan that Rizal, whose real name is Mohammad Rizal Johan Van Geyzel, that a second letter to quash his charges was submitted to the AGC this morning. 

Rizal’s counsel M. Pravin asked the court to vacate the trial dates fixed on April 14 and May 2, 3 and 22, pending the result of the second letter.

The AGC had rejected the first letter which was submitted to the chambers on December 12 last year.

Rizal is facing three counts of posting remarks that insulted race and religion.

The 40-year-old comedian is accused of uploading an offensive video on three social media platforms between July 4 and 6.

Rizal was charged under section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and faces a year in jail, a RM50,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

Pravin told the court he would be submitting an application sometime next week to recover his client’s passport to allow him to perform the haj from May 15 to 29.

The judge fixed May 31 for the prosecution to update the court on the result of the second letter. She kept the trial dates on June 1 and 2. – April 6, 2023.
