THERE is no need for an emergency to be declared as the flood situation in the country is seeing signs of improvement, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said floods have also begun to subside in several areas.

“The government has decided not to announce a flood emergency as rainfall is expected to ease soon.

“Several places have also seen floodwaters receding today.

“However, there are also some places that may have stagnant water and this may take some time. But there is no need to announce an emergency for now,” he said after visiting flood-hit Segamat today.

Number of people seeking shelter at relief centres was reported to have risen to 48,989 as of this morning.

Johor continued to record the highest number of evacuees at 44,860, followed by Pahang (2,978), Negeri Sembilan (587), Malacca (493) and Selangor (71).

Anwar arrived at the SK Gemereh relief centre in Segamat at 11.20am and spent about 20 minutes with the 32 displaced families, who gave him a warm welcome.

He also inspected the children’s activity room at the centre run by the Social Welfare Department.

Anwar was earlier briefed on the flood situation in the Johor district at the 4th Royal Artillery Regiment Segamat Camp. – March 5, 2023.
