Toddler dies after 4 hours in locked car


A TODDLER died after her mother left her locked inside the car while she was at work, in Port Dickson, The Star reports today.

Two-year-old Nur Awfa Humaisha was unconscious when hours later, Hasmah Masroh, 32, ran to the car upon realising that the girl had been left in the vehicle parked near the Port Dickson Vocational College.

Port Dickson OCPD Supt Zainduin Ahmad said Hasmah, who was a lecturer at the college, only realised her child was still in the car around 1pm. 

“When she rushed to the vehicle, the victim was already unconscious,” he said.

He said police believed the girl had been locked in the car for four hours.

She was rushed to the Port Dickson health clinic but died a while later.

It is believed she died of heatstroke. A post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death. 

No arrests have been made. Police have classified the case as child abuse, under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act.

The offence is punishable by jail of up to 10 years and a fine not exceeding RM20,000. – March 14, 2018.
