BERSATU president Muhyiddin Yassin should not be ‘two-faced’ over the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe into his party over political funding, Fahmi Fadzil said today.

The PKR information chief said that Muhyiddin should accept the investigations just as he had previously backed such actions against other parties such as Umno.

“A gentle reminder to Bersatu members that they have to remind their party president not to be two-faced on his position on MACC and the freezing of their accounts.

“If at one time it is fair, it should be fair at other times as well,” Fahmi told reporters at the Chinese New Year Open House held at Taman Sri Sentosa, Kuala Lumpur today.

In 2018, when Umno accounts were frozen, Muhyiddin, who was the then Home Minister, had said that MACC had the right to freeze accounts based on its findings.

However, last week, Muhyiddin said his party will be writing to the MACC to request the anti-graft agency unfreeze its accounts.

MACC chief Azam Baki had earlier confirmed that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin accused the government of using the MACC as a political tool.

Muhyiddin previously denied claims his government had misappropriated RM92.5 billion of Covid emergency funding when he was prime minister.

On Bersatu’s report to MACC about Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), alleging excessive spending during the November general election, Fahmi did not respond to it but said anyone is entitled to lodge a report.

Last week, Puchong Bersatu division chief Mohd Shukor Mustaffa lodged a report at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on the alleged lavish spending by PH and BN during the campaign period. – February 12, 2023.
