NATIONAL hockey player Hanis Nadiah Onn has been suspended from representing the country, including in the upcoming SEA Games in Cambodia, over a racist remark she had made recently.

The Youth and Sports Ministry said the player has been indefinitely suspended after posting an offensive comment on social media regarding the A.R. Rahman concert held recently.

“Malaysian Hockey Confederation will review Hanis’ suspension if she shows a positive change in behaviour,” said the ministry in a statement.

The 26-year-old landed in hot water after her Instagram comment implied that it was “smelly” at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil where the legendary Indian composer A.R. Rahman had held a concert.

Hanis later apologised and deleted the comment.

Hanis said in her 10 years of her involvement in hockey, she has played in a multiracial team and was sorry for her negligence which led to the negative connotation in her comment.

Previously, MHC president Subahan Kamal said the confederation viewed the matter seriously and Hanis would be summoned to face its disciplinary committee.

“We are concerned over the matter and as the minister had said, there’s no room for racism in sports. The minister has instructed MHC to investigate the matter,” he had said. – February 9, 2023.
