THE National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has requested that the Education Ministry (MOE) reintroduce relief teacher positions to cover the shortage of teachers, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
Its secretary-general Fouzi Singon said a study carried out by NUTP showed that the shortage was due to the addition of new schools, the increase in the number of pupils and classes, early and compulsory retirements, as well as health issues.
“I think it’s been a long time since the MOE last offered a relief teacher programme. Previously, it was offered for a period of about one to two years to suitable candidates who had finished their university, diploma level studies and STPM… this managed to cover the vacancies that existed.
“But now, the programme is no more, while the need is still there… maybe the minister (of education) can consider appointing relief teachers for the time being,” he said.
Fouzi added that the shortage of teachers in Sabah and Sarawak was partly due to the policy that only 10% of the teaching staff there could be from the peninsula.
He hoped that the respective state governments would be willing to open a bigger quota for education graduates meet the current needs in schools. – Bernama, January 31, 2023.

May be the Sarawak and Sabah Govt ought to review their quota policy on teachers from the Peninsula. Perhaps impose such quota on say, Headmasters and assistant principals.
I was a relief teacher 50 years ago and I found it to be satisfying as you contribute in moulding young minds though eventually I left for another discipline. There is no substitution to good educational guidance to mould a young person.
