A good day for appam and south Indian fare

WE will go anywhere for good appam, especially when it’s served at lunchtime. That got us to Day to Day Restaurant in Puchong, some 15km from where we live.

This South Indian restaurant calls itself a family curry house, serving a variety of curries and vegetable dishes. But it has also on its menu some Malay, Chinese and western dishes.

We were there for appam and we ordered three – sweet, with banana and the third one with an egg on top. That was how we began lunch with the sweet appam, then moving on to fried beehoon, chicken curry and tampal roti with egg.

We were truly happy with the banana appam, its moist centre was generously covered with sliced bananas. It had a lacy, crispy edge all round. Drizzled with coconut milk, the appam was simply lovely.

Likewise the plain sweet appam with its large, creamy centre sprinkled with brown sugar. We liked the tangy, fermented smell of the rice flour mixture used to make it.

The egg appam was perfectly done, with the yolk oozing out at the touch of a fork.

At the food counter we picked out vegetables such as deep-fried cauliflower, cabbage and snake gourd. We added to that a plate of plain fried beehoon and ordered some chicken curry to share.

The chicken curry was hot, with the fragrance of spices coming through. It went well with the fried beehoon.

We also had tampal roti, which is roti canai completely covered in egg and fried. It was like eating an omelette with a chewy centre. It made a good snack dipped in curry.

We wrapped up lunch with masala tea which was surprisingly good, with the right balance of tea, fresh milk and fragrant spices like cardamom, cloves and cinnamon.

Lunch for the three of us came to just RM46.30.

We should come back to Day to Day Restaurant for its banana leaf lunch, mutton varuval and fish curry, which I’m told is good.

It’s also known for nasi goreng, such as the very spicy nasi goreng Titanic and nasi goreng Chennai Express. Chicken nasi briyani is popular here too. Of course, you can also have your fill of thosai, puttu and idly.

The western menu offers chicken and lamb chop, burger, fish and chips, and even chicken Maryland.
