CAMERON Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor and Lanang MP Alice Lau have been elected as deputy parliament speakers today.
Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Ramli gathered 148 votes while DAP’s Alice garnered 146 votes.
A total of three names were nominated for the deputy speakers post, with opposition whip chief Takiyuddin Hassan nominating Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin for the position.
Speaker Johari Abdul said as there were three names put forward, he instructed a ballot be carried out to elect the deputy speakers .
Mas Ermieyati, who was the former deputy law minister, picked up 74 votes.
Both deputy speakers are representing the government.
Earlier today, former Sungai Petani lawmaker Johari Abdul was elected the parliament speaker, after the legislature convened for the first time since the general election.
Johari, who is a loyalist of Anwar Ibrahim polled 147 votes while former Home Minister Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad picked up 74 votes.
The tally showed that 147 unity government lawmakers had voted for Johari.
The Perikatan Nasional bloc went with Mohd Radzi as expected. – December 19, 2022.
