POLICE have detained former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau for allegedly making seditious comment during an election campaign speech on November 17, which has since gone viral.
In a statement, Pahang police chief Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said Hew, also known as “Superman Hew”, made the speech in Cantonese in Raub, Pahang.
“Pahang police, with Bukit Aman’s assistance, have detained Hew Kuan Yau today at a house in Puchong Jaya in Selangor.
“On November 17, Pahang police had opened an investigation paper on Hew for allegedly making seditious speech at a political party ceramah in Raub.
“Part of the video was shared on social media and preliminary investigations found the speech to contain elements that can threaten public order,” said Ramli.
According to the top cop, the probe is being carried out under section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954 and section 505(b) of the penal code as well as under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The 52-year-old is currently locked-up at the Dang Wangi district police station for further questioning. – November 23, 2022.
