POLICE have arrested a 30-year-old man who threatened on social media to kill the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over the appointment of the prime minister.

The man was also inciting the public to protest the power of the king to select the prime minister.

Reports said the man had posted the threat, together with a picture of the king, on his personal Instagram.

The post went viral, prompting Malaysians to urge the authorities to take action.

Police today said the man was arrested last night in Kajang. A remand order was obtained to detain the suspect, who is under investigation for sedition, for three days starting today.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said police had detected posts tinged with racial and religious sentiments as well as insults aimed at the monarchy as the wait for a prime minister to be named is prolonged.

“We are warning social media users to refrain from abusing the platform to spread provocative content that may cause public alarm.

“Strict action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the sedition act or the penal code will be taken against anyone trying to create a situation that threatens public safety and order,” he said in a statement last night. – November 23, 2022.
