THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has opened an investigation paper to probe into a letter of pledge purportedly supporting Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as prime minister after the general election (GE), Azam Baki said.
The anti-graft body chief commissioner said MACC has received reports on the matter and will begin a probe into the issue.
“We have received complaints on the letter and the allegations.
“MACC will open investigation paper so the matter can be looked into,” Azam was quoted as saying in reports.
Azam said the matter would be investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for abuse of power.
Azam also said that he would be calling certain people in for questioning.
“Let my officers decide who to call. They will do so after looking at the documents that have been surrendered to them,” he added.
The matter came to light after images of what seemed to be an Umno letter of pledge signed by party members was shared on social media.
The letter appeared to show some lawmakers supporting Zahid to become the next prime minister.
Among them were Lenggeng incumbent Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Sungai Buloh candidate Khairy Jamaluddin.
Shamsul and Khairy have since denied signing such a letter.
Khairy has expressed support for caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to continue serving after the polls, saying his backing is in line with BN’s position as announced by Zahid.
Earlier today, Zahid said that the letter is fake.
The BN chairman said the coalition’s political rivals are using the move to spread fake news as campaign material.
Zahid, however, did not name the political parties in question. – November 3, 2022.
