CERAMAH Mega Muar in Johor last night was thrown into chaos when Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman took to the podium.

A group of around 30 youngsters started jeering at Syed Saddiq, shouting “penipu” (liar) while the Muar MP was talking about the assistance he had rendered the people in the last two years.

The heckling caused Syed Saddiq to halt his speech, saying he has no time to argue with the troublemakers.

“I’m sad to see the situation of Muar children.

“I don’t have time to argue with them because I’m here to defend the fate of youngsters, not to make them suffer more,” the former youth and sports minister said.

Police moved in to prevent a scuffle between the youngsters and Muda members.

The police blocked the group marching forward and instructed them to leave, forcing the youths to leave on their motorbikes.

At the same time, the crowd shouted at the youngsters, telling them to “balik” (go back).

Farhan Iqbal, an aide to Syed Saddiq, said the youngsters were paid to provoke the speaker at the event.

Minutes after Syed Saddiq resumed his speech, the youths returned to the scene revving their motorcycles and drowning out his speech.

Syed Saddiq said he was ready to fight but not with punches.

“If they want to threaten, we fight.  But we fight with arguments, not with their methods – that is the true spirit of a Muar-lad.

“If they think they can shut us down with their motorcycles, then they are wrong,” he said.

The youths fled when police headed toward them.

Syed Saddiq continued his speech, which lasted about 20 minutes, before the event came to an end.

Others who attended the event included Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong.

  • All these young hecklers need to be arrested for disturbing a democratic process. No two ways about it.
