FORMER prime minister Najib Razak will be sent back to Kajang Prison to continue serving his jail sentence after doctors treating him at Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (CRH) gave the green light for the ex-prime minister to return to his cell.

CRH in a statement this evening said Najib’s family members have been briefed on his current condition, adding that medical experts from Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) have also agreed that he could return to prison.

“Najib had undergone treatment and rehabilitation during his time at CRH and recent checks on his condition found that he is recovering well.

“He was taught certain exercise techniques by physiotherapists. Our consultants also met with his family members where they were informed of his condition.”

“Following the advice from experts in HKL and CRH, Najib will be sent back to Kajang Prison,” the hospital said.

On Wednesday, the Prison Department confirmed that Najib had been admitted to the rehabilitation centre for treatment.

The department said Najib was referred to CRH following his hospitalisation at HKL on September 12.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Najib was transferred to CRH because he required physiotherapy.

Social media was abuzz last week with allegations that Najib, who is serving a 12-year jail sentence, had been given preferential treatment after he was sent to CRH.

The Prison Department released a statement confirming Najib was sent to CRH.

The statement came three days after allegations were spread on social media that a person called “Merpati” was receiving special treatment in jail.

The Prison Department’s statement, however, did not address several other allegations on social media, including the proposed modification of prison conditions for Najib.

The department said Najib is receiving treatment in line with Section 37 of the Prison Act 1995 as well as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners, adding that it is responsible for ensuring the health of an inmate at all times and is obliged to provide the necessary treatment, facilities and medicine towards this end.

On September 13, judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah had adjourned Najib’s hearing in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial because of the accused’s admission to HKL. – September 23, 2022.

  • It was never in doubt. This crook and his entire family are pathetic liars. This was a ruse to fix up his 'duplex' cell like a 7 star hotel suite complete with a butler maybe?

  • We need an independent investigation of the facilities being provided to Najib at Kajang Prison.
Clearly, there is deep skepticism about the accuracy of the statements being provided by the Prisons DG.
