PRIME Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob should ask Muhyiddin Yassin to step down as the chairman of the National Recovery Council (NRC) for implying that the country’s leader had failed to manage the economy, Lim Guan Eng said today.

The DAP chairman said bickering between the two can only lead to division and uncertainty over who is in charge.

Lim was referring to Muhyiddin’s statement telling Ismail to call an election if he cannot fix the economy.

Muhyiddin had earlier this week said that the prime minister had failed to heed any of the council’s recommendations to boost the ailing economy.

“What is the point of retaining Muhyiddin as NRC chairman if his and the NRC’s suggestions are ignored and cast aside?,” Lim asked.

“Ismail has to decide by next month whether to submit to Umno’s pressure and self-interest by calling for general elections during the monsoon season of massive floods this year, but he must do that from a position of strength and authority, and not with a divided government.”

Muhyiddin had said that Ismail had failed to take steps to address the falling ringgit which traded at RM4.56 against the greenback yesterday.

Muhyiddin also said the government had ignored his advice about reducing Malaysia’s reliance on food imports.

Ismail had hit back at Muhyiddin, saying the economy’s failure is partly his fault. – September 21, 2022.
