PENANG is the latest state government to withdraw honorific titles conferred on jailed former prime minister Najib Razak.

In a statement, Penang deputy state secretary (development) Mohd Zakuan Zakaria said the revocation of Najib’s Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN) award takes effect today.

“This is due to the conviction and sentence that has been passed on Najib,” he said.

On Monday, Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah announced that he had revoked titles awarded to Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

Selangor State Secretary and Registrar of Awards Haris Kasim said after consulting with members of the Selangor Royal Council, the sultan agreed to withdraw the awards from three people.

He said the revocation of awards was done after the Selangor ruler chaired a Selangor Royal House special meeting at the Royal Hall, Istana Alam Shah in Klang.

He said Najib was stripped of the Datuk and Datuk Seri titles, and Rosmah the Datin Paduka Seri title.

Haris said the revocation of awards is in accordance with the sultan’s prerogative powers under article XXXVII and article XXXIX of the Selangor constitution as well as the related status of majesty and conventions practised in Selangor.

In October 2018, the Negri Sembilan palace withdrew the titles it had bestowed on Najib and Rosmah.

Last month, the Federal Court in a unanimous decision quashed Najib’s appeal and upheld his sentence in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

The apex court ordered him to begin his 12-year jail sentence immediately.

The former prime minister was also sentenced to a RM210 million fine in default of five years in prison.

Rosmah was found guilty of three corruption charges at the High Court on September 1. – September 15, 2022.
