THE Selangor palace has revoked the Datuk Seri and Datin Paduka Seri titles that were conferred on jailed prime minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, effective today.
Selangor State Secretary and Registrar of Awards Haris Kasim said after consulting with members of the Selangor Royal Council, the sultan has agreed to withdraw the awards from three people.
He said the revocation of awards was done after Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has agreed to chair the special meeting of the Selangor Royal House at the Royal Hall, Istana Alam Shah in Klang.
He said Najib was stripped of the Datuk and Datuk Seri titles; Rosmah, the Datin Paduka Seri title; and Arif Ab Rahman, the Datuk title.
Haris said the revocation of awards is in accordance with the sultan’s prerogative powers under article XXXVII and article XXXIX of the Selangor Constitution as well as the related status of majesty and conventions practised in Selangor.
He said Najib was awarded with the Datuk Seri title in 2004 and another Datuk title in 1992.
“Najib was charged in the High Court on several charges involving abuse of power, breach of trust and money laundering in the SRC International case,” he said.
“On August 23, the Federal Court upheld the conviction and sentence against him that had been previously decided by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
“So with this, due to the conviction and sentence that has been passed on him, the titles of Datuk Seri and Datuk are withdrawn and cancelled with effect from September 12.”
Haris said Rosmah was awarded the Datin Paduka Seri title in 2005.
“She was charged in court on three charges involving the offence of soliciting and accepting bribes. On September 1, the High Court convicted and sentenced her for all the charges,” he said.
“Therefore, due to the conviction and punishment that has been passed on her, her title of Datin Paduka Seri is withdrawn and cancelled with effect from September 12.”
As for Arif, Haris said he was awarded the Datuk title in 2001.
“He was convicted and sentenced by the Sessions Court on corruption charges. On January 23, the High Court upheld the conviction and sentence against him,” he said.
“So with this, his title of Datuk is withdrawn and cancelled with effect from September 12.” – September 12, 2022.
