THE National Union of Journalists Malaysia (Nujm) has raised its concerns over the appointment of the new group editor of the New Straits Times.

In a statement, general secretary Chin Sung Chew, said the removal of the English daily’s present group editor Ahmad Lokman Mansor was shocking.

“This is so shocking especially with reports citing that the appointment came to pass allegedly due to political interference,” said Chin.

There have also been reports of journalists being unhappy with the new direction taken by the company.

Chin urged the media group as well as the management of the organisation to address the issue.

He added that the consequences of sweeping such grave matters under the rug would be severe as many mainstream media companies had gone bust in the past.

“Shareholders and the board should swiftly meet with reporters to prevent further disharmony and conflict,” he said.

Yesterday New Straits Times Press Berhad (NSTP), a subsidiary of Media Prima Berhad announced that Farrah Naz Karim has been assigned to the English-language daily NST.

Farrah had served at NSTP in various capacities since 2000 which included executive editor, she was most recently attached to Media Prima Television Networks as an executive producer for current affairs programmes. – September 14, 2022.
