Comedy club founder to be charged tomorrow over racial remarks

CRACKHOUSE Comedy Club co-founder Rizal Van Geyzel will be charged tomorrow over a video in which he called Malays “lazy”, Bukit Aman said today.

Rizal will be charged under Section 233 of the Communications Multimedia Act 1998 at the Kuala Lumpur Cyber Crime Court at 9am tomorrow.  

He is facing three charges over improper use of network facilities for sharing a video making fun of racial sensitivity and racial sentiments. 

The club has been mired in controversy after a woman was charged with insulting Islam for a skit she performed during a stand-up performance.

Siti Nuramira Abdullah was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court under Section 298A(1)(a) of the Penal Code after she was said to have caused disharmony among Muslims with her performance at the club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

She faces a maximum of five years’ jail if found guilty. 

Rizal was detained after videos of him touching on racial and religious sensitivities went viral.

He spent one night at the Dang Wangi police station.

Several police reports had been lodged against Rizal, including one by Bersatu’s associate wing that alleged he had insulted Malays.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said his department will not compromise on any actions that insult religion and threaten the harmony and unity of the people. – July 21, 2022.
