No shariah charge yet for woman in comedy club case

SITI Nuramira Abdullah, the woman who allegedly insulted Islam at a comedy club, won’t be charged today at the shariah court, her lawyers said.

It was previously reported that she could be charged today after being arrested by religious authorities yesterday.

Lawyer R. Sivaraj in a statement said that the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) released Siti Nuramira at 10pm yesterday.

“We were informed by a Jawi officer at approximately 10pm last night that Siti Nuramira is to be released on bail immediately,” he said.

Another lawyer, Hannann Syoffeeya Zainal Shahrir, said their client will be informed later as to when she would face shariah charges.

“Jawi will not proceed with the supposed charges at the shariah court today,” said Hannann, adding that she was told that Jawi would get in touch with their client “when they are ready to do so.”

Last week Siti Nuramira was charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court with causing disharmony among the Muslim community.

She was charged for her offending performance in removing her hijab and baju kurung to reveal a miniskirt and spaghetti-strap top while telling the audience she was a Muslim who had memorised 15 chapters of the Quran.

Her partner Alexander Navin Vijayachandran meanwhile was charged in Petaling Jaya for uploading insulting content by posting the video of Siti Nuramira’s performance on the internet.

The couple have claimed trial to their charges.

Siti Nuramira was arrested yesterday by Jawi officials after she had posted her bail of RM20,000 for the criminal case.

Siti Nuramira’s performance was at an open-mic session at the Crackhouse Comedy Club on June 4, while the video clip of her was posted on June 16. – July 20, 2022.
