Woman in comedy club case to be charged under shariah law

SITI Nuramira Abdullah, the woman who allegedly insulted Islam at a comedy club last week, is expected to be charged at the Shariah High Court tomorrow, the New Straits Times reports.

The 26-year-old was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur High Court by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department after being released by police today.

Lawyers Ramesh N.P. Chandran and R. Sivaraj confirmed the matter after Nuramira was released today when she posted the RM20,000 bail at the Sessions Court.

Legal rights group Lawyers for Liberty had raised RM40,000 in bail for Nuramira and her partner Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, who was also charged.

Siti Nuramira, whose allegedly offending performance saw her remove her hijab and baju kurung to reveal a miniskirt and spaghetti-strap top while telling the audience she was a Muslim who had memorised 15 chapters of the Quran, needed the RM20,000 to post bail.

She was charged under section 298A of the penal code with causing disharmony among the Muslim community.

Alexander was charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for uploading insulting content by posting the video of Siti Nuramira’s performance on the internet.

The couple have claimed trial to their charges.

Siti Nuramira’s performance was at an open-mic session at the Crackhouse Comedy Club on June 4, while the video clip of her was posted on June 16. – July 19, 2022.
