Boyfriend of woman who removed hijab in comedy club charged

ALEXANDER Navin Vijayachandran, the boyfriend to the woman who removed her hijab and baju kurung at the Crackhouse Comedy Club, claimed trial today to uploading insulting content on social media. 

Alexander was accused of an offence under section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum sentence of a year’s jail, a RM50,000 fine or both.

The freelance writer, 38, was charged at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court today with sharing a posting on his Instagram account on June 5 with the intention to insult other people.

In the second charge, he is accused of sharing content via his YouTube on June 16 with the intention to insult others. 

He is alleged to have uploaded both contents at a condominium in Damansara Perdana. 

Judge Azrul Darus set bail at RM20,000 and fixed September 1 for mention.  

Earlier today at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, Alexander’s girlfriend Siti Nuramira Abdullah claimed trial to a charge of insulting Islam. 

She was charged under section 298A(1)(a) of the penal code, after she was said to have caused disharmony among Muslims with her performance at the club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

She faces a maximum five years’ jail if found guilty. The court set RM20,000 bail with one surety and ordered Siti Nuramira to surrender her passport until the disposal of the case. 

The court fixed August 18 for mention. – July 13, 2022.
