Woman in comedy club controversy claims trial to insulting Islam

A WOMAN who removed her hijab and baju kurung during an open mic session in the Crackhouse Comedy Club claimed trial to a charge of insulting Islam today.

Siti Nuramira Abdullah was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court under section 298A(1)(a) of the penal code after she was said to have caused disharmony among Muslims with her performance at the club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

She faces a maximum five years’ jail if found guilty.

Siti Nuramira, 26, registered her plea after the charge was read to her before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali.

Siti Nuramira was brought to the court at 9am handcuffed. She looked calm as she sat in the dock.

The court set RM20,000 bail with one surety and ordered Siti Nuramira to surrender her passport until the disposal of the case.

The court fixed August 18 for mention.

Her boyfriend, Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, was also seen arriving separately at the Petaling Jaya court this morning.

He will be charged under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misusing network facilities.

In a 54-second video uploaded to social media, the woman claimed she had memorised most parts of the Quran, before removing her attire to reveal a blouse and mini skirt.

Police then detained her in Taman Jaya, Petaling Jaya, and she has been in remand until today. – July 13, 2022.
