UMNO grassroots must stay united despite the internal tussle between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Shahril Hamdan said.
“Old stories should not be revisited as meetings do not necessarily mean support for any sides,” said the Umno information chief in a statement.
“The president knows better and let’s allow him to decide,” said the economic director in the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement on Facebook.
Shahril said that the Umno general assembly had already decided that the president and his deputy Mohamad Hasan will look after party matters while Ismail will handle the government.
“As such, it is the president’s prerogative to decide on Umno Supreme Council appointments.
“He won the party elections and we must respect the institution,” he added.
On the same note, he said that Ismail’s prerogative on cabinet positions must also be respected and hence members should not be split on this.
Shahril’s response comes after former Supreme Council Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s revelations yesterday that Zahid had supported Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim to be prime minister last year and is not fit to be president anymore.
Tajuddin, who is aligned to Ismail, was dropped from the Supreme Council last week and replaced by former president Najib Razak’s supporter Isham Jalil from Selangor.
The Pasir Salak lawmaker also claimed that there was a move to remove Zahid as early as 2020 but it failed as Mohamad had backed out.
Shahril said internal rifts would only weaken Umno and benefit their opponents.
“Our opponents will only use these allegations to attack us. How will we sell stability if Umno is divided?”
As it is, Shahril said that Umno’s cyber-troopers were being used to attack Ismail and painting him as “a weak prime minister”.
“One day it’s against the PM while another day it’s against the president. Our rivals will only cheer while our members will be confused,” said Shahril. – June 28, 2022.
