PETRONAS today issued an apology for the ang pow debacle which had offended the Chinese community celebrating the Lunar New Year tomorrow.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page today, the company extended their apologies to those it unhappy with the colour of Petronas’ ang pow this year.

Petronas said the design was reproduced from original artwork in the Galeri Petronas art collection.

“The packet showcased a Chinese ink painting from the Petronas art collection, which depicts the welcoming of a new dawn and hopes for the new year.

“The light coloured background, however, has been mistaken for white, which in Chinese culture, is considered inauspicious.”

Petronas said it was never its intention to overlook cultural sensitivities.

“We are pleased to share that based on the feedback, we have produced a new red design for our money packets.” – February 15, 2018.

  • Ha Ha. That will put a nail on the coffin of MCA when GE comes along. Someone in the oil company probably hates MCA that they want to bring it down.

  • It is so obvious this mistake happened because Petronas does not have Chinese staff in their publicity and customer service department. This is the direct result of the government's affirmative policies which discriminate against the minorities in hiring staff.

    • Do you really need a Chinese to avoid a 'mistake' like this? Are you saying a Chinese is expected to make a similar mistake towards the Malays like greeting a Malay 'happy new year' during Hari Raya? c'mon lah, the Malays in Petronas do read news like us, surely they know how angry the Chinese were when Ibrahim Ali did this!!!

  • Again it is intentional and hoping a simple appology to be well received. Looks like the birth right stupidity is affirmative in them.

  • Not the first time. Few years back, Ibrahim Ali, president of Perkasa, gave out ang pows to old folks in white envelopes.
