Nestle denies Milo has 40% sugar content per serving

NESTLE Malaysia yesterday denied allegations that its Milo beverage product has a high sugar content – as much as 40% per serving.

Its halal affairs committee chairman, Othman Md Yusoff, said if consumers’ intake of the beverage followed the suggested serving of five spoons of Milo mixed with 200ml of water, the sugar content would be only around 6%.

“The 40% sugar content per serving refers to the sugar content in the Milo powder before it is mixed with water. After water is added, the sugar content is only about 6%.

“Of the 6%, only 3% comes from added sugar content, while the remaining 3% is natural sugar from milk, or lactose, that is found in the Milo powder,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

He was commenting on a video of a social media activist that went viral recently, claiming that Milo has a high sugar content. – Bernama, February 7, 2018.

  • WHAT BULL. 6% Sugar IS STILL HIGH. Coke has 11%, Red Bull and other energy drink typically 10%.

  • Don't be misled by her play on the numbers/percentages. On Milo packaging, it states that sugar content is 16g per serving of 3 tbsp (which is 28g). This makes the percentage of sugar per serving to be 57.1%.

Of course, placing 16g of sugar in 200ml of water will only net you 7.4% of sugar content (Milo powder + water). However, you are still consuming 16g of sugar!

If a child drinks 3 glasses of Milo in a day, he will be consuming 48g of sugar in a day!

According to the American Heart Association, children should eat LESS THAN 25g of sugar a day.

From 3 glasses of Milo alone, your child will be consuming 192% of the daily recommended sugar intake!
