THE racial riots of May 13 did not spread to states with strong support for PAS because Islam teaches its followers to be humane, said Abdul Hadi Awang.

“Racial riots broke out due to strained ethnic relations. But they didn’t happen in Kelantan, Kedah, states that have strong support for PAS,” the PAS president told party supporters at a pre-election rally in Ipoh yesterday night.

He said Chinese families and non-Muslim shops in these states were safe when racial clashes broke out in Kuala Lumpur after the 1969 elections on May 13.

“This is the humanity taught by Islam. Places where knowledge of religion was lacking were broken,” Hadi said.

Almost 200 people died in the events of May 13, according to the official tally. Homes, stores and vehicles were torched. As a result, the government declared a state of emergency and suspended Parliament.

Hadi reiterated his plan for PAS to be kingmaker in the 14th general election by winning 40 federal seats.

He did not say whether the party would support Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan, both of which he had denounced.

Earlier, PAS Perak commissioner Razman Zakaria said the party has decided on the candidates for most of the state seats.

“We have the names for 43 seats (out of 59 in Perak). To win, we only need 30 seats,” said Razman.

Some 2,000 to 3,000 people attended the rally.

PAS’ best electoral outing in Perak was in 2008, when the Islamist party as part of the Pakatan Rakyat pact won two federal seats and six state seats.

In 2013, PAS contested seven parliamentary seats and won two, Parit Buntar and Bukit Gantang, which it had won in the last election. It won five state seats.

It lost Lubok Merbau, Pasir Panjang and Changkat Jong to BN but won Changkat Jering and Sungai Rapat.

It did not win any federal or state seats in Perak in 2004. – February 4, 2018.

  • This guy lives in time warp, all the way back to the Crusades with a fairy tale of the story. Doubt he can even pass secondary school math today. In China and Singapore he may not even pass top primary school math.
