THE Pakatan Harapan presidential council has reiterated its call for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his cabinet to provide a detailed explanation on the management of floods in a special Parliament seating.

“At the same time, we are of the view that the government must advise Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry, in line with his majesty’s decree for a flood post-mortem, including in Sabah and Sarawak,” the council said in a statement.

The council added that the post-mortem will reveal the shortcomings in planning and the delays in implementation, which can be resolved.

They include the issues highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report, such as the conversion of six plots of land earmarked for flood retention pond for development.

The council noted that social media users have slammed the cabinet for its sluggish response and accused it of showboating instead of helping the victims.

“It is saddening to see the effects of the flood in terms of property losses and the lives of 50 people,” it said, adding that the catastrophe has opened eyes on the reality of climate change and human activities, especially logging. – December 31, 2021.
