NAJIB Razak, who visited his daughter and grandchild in Singapore last month, defended his trip today, after pictures of him playing golf with a friend went viral.
The former prime minister in a post on Facebook asked why an issue is being made out of this, and whether he should instead be sitting with his grandchild all day for all six days he was in the republic.
His response comes after photos of him with Singapore businessman Sam Goi, who is a close acquaintance, were circulated online.
The Pekan MP and Goi are seen posing next to a Rolls-Royce car in one picture, while the duo are seen decked out in golf outfits in another.
Najib, who was then on trial, had requested the court to allow him to visit his newborn grandchild in Singapore.
His request was allowed and his passport temporarily returned to him until December 6.
Najib, in the same post, said Goi was a fan of his economic and development policies when he was prime minister.
“He asked about my views on the direction of the economy and development in Malaysia because he wanted to invest in Malaysia.
“Is it wrong to use my personal time to give my views to foreign investors who want to invest in Malaysia although I am no longer prime minister?” he asked, adding that Goi owns the Sutera Harbour Resort in Sabah.
Najib was found guilty of misappropriating SRC International Sdn Bhd funds in July last year, and was fined RM210 million and sentenced to 12 years’ jail.
He had filed for an appeal at the appellate court, which upheld his conviction shortly after his return from Singapore.
His sentence is stayed pending a final appeal at the Federal Court. – December 12, 2021.
