THE Ministry of Environment and Water said earmarking RM50 million as part of a strategic plan to prevent the recurrence of water surge at the foot of Gunung Jerai and flash floods in Yan, Kedah marks one of its 100-day achievements.

Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said it was a target that had directly helped the people in tackling water supply and flood warning issues.

According to Tuan Ibrahim, the ministry managed to solve water supply issues at three water treatment plants in the area, as well as complete a flood mitigation project.

During a Bernama interview on 100-day achievements, he said the ministry also aimed to implement five major projects, including supplying water to residents living far from the main distribution pipe.

“We have developed a system called Wakaf Air, started within these 100 days. We aim for 12 more projects that can benefit more than 6,000 residents,” he said, adding that the ministry is also taking over sewerage services from municipal councils.

“It means Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) will have taken over the system of managing our sewerage for the whole country and we have already achieved our target. Although this process has taken a long time, we have succeeded in resolving it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the ministry was forging ahead with climate change policy.

“The country needs a system and the ministry is developing that legal system. From there, we will create the national climate change act,” he said.

Tuan Ibrahim said the achievement would be used as the key performance indicator for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s 100-day target and praised his ministry for its efforts. – November 26, 2021.

  • What are you doing about plastic waste? Covid has generated tons of plastic waste which is just thrown in the landfills. Plastic wrappers from online purchases is a big problem. The ministry need to find a solution to this as plastic will damage our environment and our marine life.
